WINTER FUN IN REGENSBURG!

January is not necessarily the most popular winter month, but the cold season often offers a lot more opportunities than we think! Do you find January rather cold, gray, dark and uncomfortable? Then we have tips for you for a large portion of coziness and variety.

Here are our 8 tips for winter:

1) Ice skating in the Donau-Arena

We recently got our skates out of the cellar and are keen to reactivate our rusty ice skating skills. Admittedly, we’re actually starting from scratch, but as a child we felt like we were ice skating every winter.
If it stays this cold, a lake might even freeze over again, otherwise the artificial ice remains: the Donau-Arena, with an ice surface of 1,800m², is open from Wednesday to Saturday afternoons until the end of March, Thursday evenings and when the Polar Bears are not playing on Sundays or Friday evenings. If you don’t have your own skates, you can hire them from Tom’s Sportshop in the Donau-Arena. During the ice skating season, the good old disco run takes place every Wednesday evening from 20:00 – 22:00 and Saturday evening from 19:15 – 22:15.

2) Curling in the Prüfeninger Wintergarten

Until the end of January, you can still rent one of six curling rinks in the Prüfeninger Wintergarten. The price per rink for two hours is €69 incl. VAT, and a maximum of 16 people can play in two to four teams. Six curling sticks and a stave are provided per rink. Food and drink are available directly at the ice rinks in the heated panorama tent.

3) Take a winter trip to the Bavarian Forest

The Bavarian Forest is not far from Regensburg and is ideal for a trip to get into the right winter mood. The ski season has recently opened there, but you can also go on a winter hike, a snowshoe hike or a sleigh ride. For example, we discovered snowshoeing a few years ago. Various organizers also offer guided snowshoe hikes with snowshoe hire for beginners.
Our tip: If you miss that little bit of hut feeling, you should take a trip to one of the huts in the Bavarian Forest. For example to the Haidsteinerhütte. Numerous hiking trails lead there. Whether from Runding, Walting, Liebenstein or Wolframslinde. You can also set off from the Hotel Bayerwaldhof.
(Haidstein 1, 93466 Chamerau, access via Bad Kötzting, OT Liebenstein).
Or you can take a hike to the largest waterfalls in the Bavarian Forest, the Rissloch Falls near Bodenmais. You can find more tips here: Favorite excursions.

4) Sweating in the sauna

The Westbad offers 12,000 square meters of wellness spa with six different saunas, a steam bath, whirlpool, outdoor pool, cold plunge pool, footbaths, ice fountains and experience showers. However, due to the current energy problems, the soft sauna and the herbarium will remain closed until further notice. The heated outdoor pool and the whirlpool in the sauna complex are also currently unavailable. However, the four largest and most beautiful saunas and the steam bath are open. Daily from 9.00 am to 10.00 pm, ladies’ sauna on Mondays. Admission from €18 for 3 hours.
If you want to sweat a little more exclusively, you can do so at the Winzerer Heights in the silk plantation. In addition to a double sauna, there is also a hammam, a Roman steam bath, a Razul bath and a small pool (from €58 for 4 hours).

5) Organize a game night

The long winter evenings are ideal for a cozy game night. Crime dinners or games such as “Micro Macro: Crime City”, in which you have to solve various cases, are particularly popular at the moment. Exit games, in which the aim is to escape from a situation as quickly as possible by solving various tasks and puzzles, are also very popular. A classic detective game is of course Cluedo, in which you have to determine the murderer from various suspects in a house. You can find even more tips here: Game night

6) Enjoy culture

Treat yourself to a cultural experience again. We recently went to the jazz club and the theater and it was wonderful. Take a look at the Regensburg Theater, Turmtheater and Statt-Theater schedules or see what’s on at the Akademie-Theater, Audimax and Regensburg cinemas.
Our tip: the jazz festival Sparks & Visions from January 19 to 21, 2024 at Theater Regensburg!

7) Eat hot waffles or crêpes

When it’s really cold, a hot waffle or crêpe outside tastes great. Waffles have become increasingly popular in recent years. In Regensburg, some ice cream parlors offer waffles in winter, but there are even dedicated waffle stores, such as Mr. Waffel on Bismarckplatz. Or how about a sweet or savory crêpe at Stella Eiscafé on the Steinerne Brücke (Brückstrasse 2)?

8) Take a course

In winter, leisure activities are always somewhat more limited than in summer. This time of year is therefore ideal for learning something new, even if it’s just to pass the time. Take a look at the VHS program, where new courses are starting in January and there are still places available. How about a quilting workshop on January 20, 2024 or a samba drumming taster workshop on January 21, 2024?

Have a good time this winter!
