Vacation at home
VACATION AT HOME IN REGENSBURG!
Vacation at home? Fortunately, the area around Regensburg is great for that! We want to make the most of the summer and do lots of cycling, hiking, trips to the lake and excursions.
Everyone has their own insider tip in the area, a favorite place where you can relax and unwind. The Walhalla, where you can feel a bit like you’re in Greece, is of course well-known. But Regensburg has many more beautiful excursion destinations to offer.
For example, you can discover over 15 castles and palaces in the surrounding area, from the castle ruins in Donaustauf, Brennberg, Laaber or in beautiful Kallmünz to the ideal image of a knight’s castle, such as Prunn Castle near Riedenburg, or the baroque Ramspau Castle near Regenstauf. And instead of the seaside, you can head to one of the many lakes, such as the Sarchinger, Guggenberger, Schwetzendorfer or Roither Weiher.
Find out what we have planned this year to enjoy summer in Regensburg to the full here.
Our 11 tips for the perfect vacation at home:
1) Cycle part of the Five Rivers Cycle Route
We have chosen the Neumarkt-Regensburg route. From Regensburg we cycle towards Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz via Kelheim, Riedenburg and Beilngries. The route from Regensburg to Neumarkt is 108 km long, the very sporty can probably do it in one day, but we will take our time and probably stop for an overnight stay in Dietfurth after 65 km. It is then another 43 km from Dietfurth to Neumarkt. We take the train back from Neumarkt to Regensburg.
2) With the tent to the Murner See
In the middle of the Upper Palatinate Lake District, nestled on a green headland between Murner See and Brückelsee, lies CampingPark Murner See. Perfect for a short break in a tent.
3) Go on a canoe or kayak tour
Only about 5 minutes away from Regensburg, you will find the canoe rental “Paddelzeit” (paddelzeit.com) near Mariaort. There you can book various day tours on the Naab, e.g. from Kallmünz, Pielenhofen or Etterzhausen to Mariaort. Multi-day tours are also offered.
There is even a Café Boot with coffee specialties, cakes, drinks and ice cream.
Or how about a canoe tour on the Regen from Nittenau to Ramspau or Heilinghausen with subsequent pick-up from Ramspau or Heilinghausen? Bookable e.g. at www.bootwandern.de
4) Spend a weekend in Kallmünz
In August, we want to cycle along the Naab Valley cycle path from Regensburg to Kallmünz (approx. 30 km) and spend one or two nights at the beautiful Raitenbuch Castle. In addition to the castle ruins, you can enjoy a wonderful swim in the Naab, stroll through the small alleyways or discover art.

5) Travel by boat from Regensburg via Kelheim to the Danube Gorge
Until September 14, 2024, it’s cast off every Saturday for the day cruise to Kelheim and Weltenburg. Departure at 9.30 am from Dultplatz / Oberpfalzbrücke. Arrival Kelheim: approx. 12.30 pm. If booked: Onward journey to Weltenburg – you will be informed of the departure time on board. Stay in Weltenburg: approx. 12.30 – 15.45 hrs. Return journey: Weltenburg 15.45 hrs. Arrival Regensburg-Dultplatz: approx. 18.00 hrs. You can obtain the combined tickets from the Klinger Schifffahrt staff at Dultplatz from 09.00 on the day of the trip. The Dultplatz landing stage at the Oberpfalzbrücke is a little difficult to find. It is located directly next to or under the Oberpfalzbrücke.
6) On the trail of nature in Höllbachtal or Otterbachtal
The Höllbach valley between Brennberg and Falkenstein is a popular refuge. The “Hölle” nature reserve resembles a sea of granite blocks and is a truly enchanted place. At the weekend, the Hölle can be quite busy – if that’s too much for you, we recommend the equally charming Otterbachtal near Altenthann. There is no shortage of valleys in our region – it is difficult to decide whether the Altmühltal, Labertal, Naabtal or Regental valleys are more enchanting.

7) Bach an der Donau instead of Wachau
Not far from Regensburg, nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Forest, lies the wine-growing village of Bach an der Donau. There are cozy wine taverns here where the palatable “Bacherer” is served. Bach also has two museums, the Baier Wine Museum, where you can visit one of the oldest wine presses in Germany and the accompanying educational wine trail, and the “Kittenrain” gemstone mine. Bach an der Donau can be reached by car, by bike via the Danube cycle path towards Straubing, by bus line 5 or by boat. Klinger Schifffahrt sails to Bach until October 6, 2024 Tuesday to Sunday at 10.30 am and 2.00 pm (Mondays only 2.00 pm). Until October 31 daily at 2.00 pm and Saturday / Sunday also at 10.30 am.
8) Jura Trail instead of the Alps
Between Eilsbrunn and Schönhofen lies the Alpine Steig, a wonderful excursion destination. Behind the “Röhrl” restaurant in Eilsbrunn, turn left along the small road “Am Alpinersteig”, where a path on the right leads up to the Alpine Steig. Simply follow the Jurasteig sign. From the summit cross on the Alpinen Steig near Schönhofen, you have a great view of the Jura landscape.
9) Nepal Himalayan Park instead of long-distance travel
Even a touch of the Far East can be found near Regensburg: the Nepal Himalaya Park near Wiesent is like an Asian vacation at home. On nine hectares, Asian culture and nature come together in a wonderful way. A very special place. Open until October 13, Saturday / Sunday / Monday and public holidays 1.00-6.00 pm.

10) Beach feeling instead of the sea
You can also do this in the city. For example, at the bathing bays on the Danube just before Westbad or at the bathing bays on the Regen at Obere and Untere Regenstrasse.
You can sit comfortably at Cinema Paradiso on the Danube until 25 August.
Alternatively, you can experience that beach feeling at Arcaden Beach. Paracelsusstr. 1.
11) Altmühltal and Essing
Geo magazine has named the wonderful Altmühl Panorama Trail one of the ten most beautiful hiking trails in Germany. It leads right through the Altmühltal Nature Park, past Markt Essing, a real gem around 30 km from Regensburg. Explore Randeck Castle, the Klausen Cave and the Tatzelwurm wooden bridge.

We hope you enjoy discovering them!
