Twin cities
DISCOVER PARTNER CITIES.
How about a visit to one of our twin cities? And do it in a sustainable way by train. This is not possible for all of Regensburg’s eight twin cities; Aberdeen in Scotland, Clermont-Ferrand in France, Tempe in Arizona (America), Odessa in the Ukraine or the Chinese city of Qingdao are simply too far away. But there are three twin cities that are worth visiting and can be easily traveled to by train. You can find out which ones here.
Our tips for a visit to one of Regensburg’s twin cities:
Bressanone / Bressanone
You can reach our Italian twin town of Brixen in South Tyrol in five hours with just one change on the Alex and the EC. There are several trains a day from Regensburg main station. For example, if you take the train at 05:47, you will be in Brixen by 10:55 for a late breakfast.
The South Tyrolean city became Regensburg’s third twin city on October 18, 1969. However, the original connection between Regensburg and Brixen is much older, as the deed of gift of the Prihsna estate to Bishop Zacharias of Säben was signed in Regensburg in 901. The foundation of the town of Brixen is based on this deed of donation. It is no wonder that a partnership developed from this that continues to this day.
Brixen is the third largest city in South Tyrol and is located 40 km north of Bolzano in the Eisack Valley. In addition to many leisure activities such as hiking or skiing, this vacation resort offers numerous sights and winding alleyways. Brixen also has many churches, the most important sacred building being the cathedral. Brixen is also famous for its Christmas market.
Pilsen
Pilsen in the Czech Republic has been our twin city since 1993. Pilsen is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic, the second largest city in Bohemia and was founded in 1295. With one or two changes of trains, you can be there in 4 to 4:45 hours. Pilsen is often referred to as the little sister of Prague. No wonder, the old town of Pilsen offers beautiful Renaissance and Baroque buildings as well as Art Nouveau and Gothic architecture and is nowhere near as crowded as Prague.
The city’s landmark is St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, the Gothic building was completed at the beginning of the 16th century. There is also a synagogue, which is the third largest in the world after the synagogues in Jerusalem and Budapest.
Pilsen is of course also famous for its Pilsener Urquell, which is even said to have health benefits. You can visit the brewery. There is even a puppet museum in Pilsen and no shortage of nice cafés and restaurants. So, let’s go there!
Budavár / Budapest
You can also reach the Hungarian capital Budapest from Regensburg main station in 6 to 7 hours with just one or two changes. Budavár is the 1st district of Budapest and Regensburg’s seventh twin city. The twinning agreement was signed on May 25, 2005.
Like Regensburg, Budavár is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two cities have something else in common: Budavár is also located on the Danube, but the river is much wider here than in Regensburg. Budavár is home to the Castle District with the famous Castle Palace, Fishermen’s Bastion and Matthias Church. You can find our detailed tips for a visit here, in our article about Budapest.
