Tips in the rain

WHAT TO DO IN REGENSBURG WHEN THE WEATHER IS BAD!

No, the name Regensburg doesn’t come from the weather, but of course our beautiful city does have bad weather from time to time. No need to fret, there are lots of great things to do in Regensburg even in bad weather.

Here are our RegensburgNow tips for rainy weather:

Go to the museum

Regensburg has quite a few museums, the House of Bavarian History on Donaumarkt, the historical museum on Dachauplatz and the KOG (Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie) are well known. But have you ever been to the Brückturm Museum? Or the Danube Maritime Museum? In the document Kepler Memorial House? The house where the astronomer Johannes Kepler died provides an insight into his life and work as well as into Regensburg’s 17th century domestic culture. There are even more “documents” of the city of Regensburg. The document Reichstag is well known and interesting, a place with a great history, as the Perpetual Diet met in the Old Town Hall from 1663 to 1806. There is also document Neupfarrplatz, document Legionary Camp Wall, document Snuff Factory and document Niedermünster, one of the largest ecclesiastical archaeological excavations in Germany. Incidentally, the Regensburg diocese offers children the “Museum for Children – Playroom of the Imagination”, for treasure hunters, puzzle fans and explorers with great activities and guided tours.

Discover art

The Städtische Galerie with its many works of art in the Leerer Beutel is always worth a visit. The above-mentioned KOG (Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie) displays an outstanding collection with a focus on the art scene in Eastern Europe. You can immerse yourself in art history by following in the footsteps of German artists who lived and worked here in the past. Regional art can be found in the Kunst- und Gewerbeverein in Ludwigstrasse. Contemporary art can be found in Regensburg’s galleries, such as Galerie Lesmeister, Galerie Artaffair, Neuer Kunstverein, Artspace Erdel and many more.

Cathedral tour

We just can’t get enough of St. Peter’s Cathedral! You can actually take a guided tour of the cathedral every year, as there is always something to discover. The cathedral cloister, which can be visited again after a long period of renovation, is particularly worth seeing. St. Peter’s Cathedral with cathedral cloister

For example, a guided tour of the castle in St. Emmeram, a guided tour of the Reichstag Museum including the torture chamber as a scary factor. The guided tours in the aforementioned document Neupfarrplatz, document Schnupftabakfabrik or document Niedermünster are also exciting. There you can discover Roman foundations under the Romanesque Niedermünster church.

Regensburg World Heritage Visitor Center

The interesting World Heritage Visitor Center is located in the Salzstadel near the Stone Bridge. On two floors you will find impressive interactive play stations and media installations as well as fascinating exhibits about Regensburg and its history.
The visitor center is open daily from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm, admission is free and best of all: between 11.00 am and 5.30 pm there are guided tours in German and English – free and spontaneous. Just ask at the information desk in the Regensburg World Heritage Visitor Center.

Go to the public library and browse

When was the last time you visited the public library in the Thon-Dittmer-Palais? As well as lots of books, there are also e-books, DVDs, audio books and a reading room with lots of newspapers and magazines. Great view of Haidplatz included. The public library also offers a wide range of digital services to anyone with a library card.

Watch a movie at the cinema

There is no shortage of cinemas in Regensburg, whether you want to see a documentary or a blockbuster. In addition to the large CinemaxX in the Arcarden, there are a few cinema gems such as the Garbo, the Ostentor-Kino, the Regina, the Filmgalerie im Leeren Beutel or the cinemas in the Andreasstadel. Among other things, there is a small jewel box for cineastes, the “Theater im Akademiesalon” with 25 theater chairs and brass lamps.

Going to the theater

The theater scene in Regensburg has a lot to offer: from drama to opera to puppet theater. A visit to the theater is worthwhile! Regensburg has several theaters to offer:
Theater Regensburg is Bavaria’s largest municipal multi-genre theater with five divisions and the venues Theater am Bismarckplatz, Theater am Haidplatz, Antoniushaus and the Junges Theater.
There is also the Akademietheater, the Turmtheater, the cabaret stage STATT-Theater and the Figurentheater im Stadtpark. The university also has a student theater. And in the Alte Mälzerei cultural center, there are concerts, cabaret, readings, poetry slams and dance as well as theater, such as the improvisation theater FASTFOOD-THEATER.

Going to the swimming pool or sauna

In addition to the Westbad and the indoor pool in Gabelsbergerstrasse, a trip to the surrounding area is also worthwhile, for example to the Keldorado in Kelheim, the Bulmare in Burglengenfeld or the Kaisertherme in Bad Abbach. You can take a sauna in Regensburg on 12,000 square meters in the Westbad, with a choice of six different saunas, a steam bath, whirlpool, outdoor pool, cold plunge pool, footbaths, ice fountains and adventure showers. You will find a real wellness temple on the Winzerer Heights in the listed silk plantation with sauna and hammam. Starry sky with 1,125 Swarovski crystals included.

Enjoy delicacies at Rehorik

For four generations, Rehorik has stood for coffee, wine and delicatessen in Regensburg. Rehorik has various locations in Gesandtenstraße 16, in the Donaueinkaufszentrum, in Straubinger Straße 62a, the delicatessen store Am Brixener Hof 11 with 130 different types of cheese, sausages, oils, spices and sauces. Directly opposite is the flagship store (Am Brixener Hof 6) with a roastery, Café 190°, coffee shop and wine cellar. The ball roaster, which is over 90 years old, is particularly interesting.

Experience the Italian way of life at IL Mercato

A market as we know it from Italy. In addition to lots of Italian food, there is a salumeria, a café bar with changing dishes and, of course, a wine section. There are also various events and tastings.

Wait, drink tea and then taste the chocolates

For example, at the Bachfischer tea house (Kapellengasse 6). In addition to over 330 varieties of tea, the teahouse also offers spices. Or in the wonderful smaller stores ‘Teelust’ near the Stone Bridge (Weiße-Lamm-Gasse 1) or in the ‘Teeladen’ in Untere Bachgasse 12. Afterwards, you can treat yourself to one of the famous pralines in Café Prinzess, such as a “Barbara Kuss”, a praline named after the beautiful Regensburg woman Barbara Blomberg, the mistress of Emperor Charles V and mother of Don Juan D’Austria.

Escape games

Escape rooms are adventure games for young people and adults that can be played in small groups. No previous knowledge is required, but a lot of team spirit is. In Regensburg, for example, there is “The Room Solvers” with creative puzzles at Obermünsterstraße 10 or the “Challenge Room” at Holzgartenstraße 36.

Bowling

Bowling is the perfect indoor sport when it’s raining. There are 20 lanes at Super Bowl Regensburg in Gewerbepark D 44. Try to hit as many pins as possible at the end of the lane – fun guaranteed!

Bouldering in the bouldering world

Bouldering is climbing without a rope or climbing harness at a safe height. We are all familiar with climbing trees or small rocks from our childhood. However, bouldering is not only possible on boulders, but also indoors on artificial walls and holds – perfect in bad weather. You can climb up to a safe jump height of around 3 to 4.5 meters. Thick foam mats dampen the fear of heights and the landing on the ground. No previous experience is required, just comfortable sports clothing. Climbing shoes can be hired on site.
There is also a large children’s world, consisting of an area for toddlers (from 3 years) and a course area (for children up to 14 years).
