The eastern quarter

EAST VERSUS WEST.

At a recent editorial meeting, Annette and Marina discussed the advantages of their respective places of residence and decided to write about them. Our author Marina made the start and reported on the city west, now it’s Annette’s turn, who lives in the city east (rather in the inner east) and tells you about her favorite places there.

THE EAST OF REGENSBURG:

After living in the middle of Regensburg’s old town for many years and being a real old town plant, I moved to the east of the city three years ago. When I had to move with my agency RegensburgNow this year, it was clear that I wanted to stay in the eastern part of the city, as I feel very much at home in this area. You can find my favorite places here.

The Villa Park

The Villa Park is located directly on the banks of the Danube, just behind the Ostentor. This 1.5-hectare park is named after the beautiful Royal Villa. It was built between 1854 and 1856 by the Munich architect Ludwig Foltz. It was commissioned by none other than the Bavarian King Maximilian II. He had the villa built as a befitting summer residence in Regensburg. Incidentally, the Villa Park is the eastern counterpart to the Herzogspark in the west, both of which are connected by the avenue belt that frames the old town.

Pastry shop Pernsteiner

The old town has Café Prinzess, the west has Konditorei Opera and we in the eastern quarter love Pernsteiner. The Pernsteiner family of confectioners founded their first own confectionery in Friedberg, Bohemia, back in 1901. After the war, their son Ludwig found his second home in Regensburg, first in Stadtamhof, then on Haidplatz and finally at Von-der-Tann-Straße 40, where the confectionery is still located today. Johannes Pernsteiner, the third generation, has been continuing the tradition and the craft since 1989. Here at Pernsteiner’s you can get everything your heart desires: fine cakes and tarts, chocolate and truffles, croissants, pastries, rolls and baguettes, even lunch dishes to take away or eat in. The patisserie also has a lovely café with a cozy garden where you can have breakfast or dinner. Of course, there are also Regensburg specialties, such as the Domspatzen praline, made from delicious milk chocolate with a nougat center. Or the Regensburg Carmelite truffles, made with the “Original Regensburg Carmelite Spirit”, which is distilled in the monastery at the Alter Kornmarkt using a closely guarded process.

The flower stage

Just below the Nibelungenbrücke bridge at Bruderwöhrdstraße 10 lies a small oasis. As soon as you turn into Bruderwöhrdstraße, you notice the decorations hanging on the Nibelungenbrücke. And the sea of flowers and plants in front of the store. The name “Blumenbühne” is a perfect choice for this store, as plants and flowers are truly given a stage here. The selection is huge, even a 100-year-old olive tree was recently on sale and the friendly team around the lovely owner Karin binds beautiful bouquets.

Trattoria Sorano and Sakis Mezes

You can feel like you’re on vacation near the indoor pool. On the one hand, there is the small Greek restaurant Sakis Mezes, and on the other, the Italian trattoria Sorano. While in Sakis Mezes you can feast on small, fine Greek dishes on Greek chairs right next to the indoor pool in Gabelsbergerstraße 14, in the Trattoria Sorano with checkered tableclothsand olive trees in the garden in the middle of Tuscany (Landshuter Str. 19).

There is now even an initiative to improve the quality of life in the eastern district: Live East Regensburg

Have fun exploring the east of Regensburg,
