Street names
MEANING OF STREET NAMES:
Many streets or squares in Regensburg are self-explanatory, such as the Kohlenmarkt, the Fischmarkt and the Alter Kornmarkt. Some names reveal the professions that were located here at the time, such as Lederergasse or Weißgerbergraben. You can see what other streets are named after here:
- GOLDENE BÄREN STRASSE: named after the former inn “Zum Goldenen Bären” (house number 6).
- ROTER HERZFLECK: also named after an inn. – Zum Roten Herzen” was also a brothel for a time.
- EINHORNGÄSSCHEN: at Einhorngäßchen 2 was the inn “Zum Schwarzen Einhorn”.
- TO THE BEAUTIFUL SITUATION: in the past, opportunity also meant location, and the location close to the Danube was and is simply beautiful.
- KUHGÄSSEL: Regensburg’s narrowest alley owes its name to a legend. It is said that a journeyman baker and a cow once stood opposite each other here without getting past each other. It is said that the cow won.
- ROTE-LÖWEN-STRASSE: no wonder, there was also an inn called “Zum Roten Löwen”.
- POETENGÄSSCHEN: The secondary school of the Protestant imperial city of Regensburg, the “Poeticum” grammar school, was located here from 1537 to 1811. Catholics went to the Jesuit grammar school of St. Paul on Jesuitenplatz.
- SILBERNE-FISCH-GASSE: named after the former inn “Zum Silbernen Fisch” (No. 15).
- WATER WITHOUT END: meant dead end.
- BLAUE LILIEN GASSE: after the former inn “Zur Blauen Lilie” (No. 4).
