Shady spots

SHADY PLACES IN REGENSBURG!

In summer, the shady spots in Regensburg are naturally in great demand. Fortunately, the entire Old Town is surrounded by parks and a green belt. This belt was laid out in the form of avenues connecting the parks from the western Old Town to the eastern Old Town. Around 1800, Prince Karl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis had Prebrunnallee, Fürst-Anselm-Allee and Ostenallee built in the English style. Since then, you can take a leisurely stroll through the greenery from Herzogspark on the Danube in the west around the old town to Villapark. HERZOGSPARK:
With a total area of around 1.5 hectares, Herzogspark is one of Regensburg’s smaller parks and is my favorite. The name of the park goes back to Duchess Marie Sophie von Würtemberg, the sister of Prince Maximilian Karl. The park was bought by the city in 1935. STADTPARK:
The oldest and, at over eight hectares, also the largest park in Regensburg. Here you can watch people play boules, admire art from the East German Gallery or trace the past at the Jewish cemetery. Curious fact: in the Middle Ages, the eastern part of the city park was used as a quarry. DÖRNBERGPARK:
Dörnbergpark owes its name to the princely administrator Ernst Friedrich von Dörnberg. The park covers an area of 7.4 hectares and is a wonderful park. The Dörnberg Palace and the so-called Swiss House/Rosarium, which now houses the Bistro Rosarium, are also beautiful to look at. VILLAPARK:
Directly on the banks of the Danube in the far east of Regensburg’s old town is the “Villapark” near the east gate. Here lies the Royal Villa, the former summer residence of the Bavarian King Maximilian II.

FÜRST-ANSELM-ALLEE:
The wide green belt of “Fürst-Anselm-Allee” opens up directly between the main railway station and the beginning of the old town. Here is the “Schwammerl”, a stand-up café in the shape of a toadstool. The Regensburger Schwammerl (Bavarian for mushroom) is a listed building. There used to be 49 of these mushroom kiosks, where dairy products were sold in the 1950s, in Germany. 8 are still in operation, one of them in Regensburg. The obelisk is dedicated to Prince Karl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis, who gave the avenue its name. Prebrunnallee, Fürst-Anselm-Allee and Ostenallee follow the course of the old city wall.

INSELPARK:
The Obere Wöhrd is one of two river islands in the Danube. The island park is located here with a fitness trail and a large playground. An enchanted source of shade on the OBEREN WÖHRD is the Alee behind the Wöhrdbad (entrance Lieblstrasse).
