10 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO IN REGENSBURG!

By the way: You can find all tips about Regensburg in the main menu under “Tips”.

  1. Discover the Middle Ages ! You can do this all over the city anyway, but there are a few places where you can get a special feeling for it. In Einhorngäßchen or Posthorngäßchen with its candle arches. At Haus Heuport opposite the west façade of the cathedral. To the right of the staircase of Haus Heuport you will find a stone with three indentations for extinguishing torches. And of course in the Reichstag Museum and particularly creepy: in the torture chamber. Or something a little more relaxed in the beautiful garden of the museum café: here you can sit in the middle of the Middle Ages, so to speak, next to the nave of the Gothic Minorite Church with a view of the fountain, columns and pointed arches. If you also want to discover something from Roman times, you should visit the Porta Praetoria (under the arches) and the Roman wall in the parking garage on Dachauplatz.
  2. Visit St. Peter’s Cathedral. It is, of course, the main protagonist of the city. Look for the laughing angel or the devil and his grandmother and admire the gargoyles outside or the old Romanesque donkey tower. It’s worth taking a guided tour of the cathedral to take a look at the small All Saints’ Chapel and the wonderful cloister. → While you’re at the cathedral, take a look at the small Maria Läng Chapel diagonally opposite (Pfauengasse 2). But please keep it quiet – the chapel is a bit like Lourdes in miniature for Regensburgers.
  3. Explore street names. There are some great street names in Regensburg and it’s worth taking a walk along them instead of the usual beaten track. My suggestion: start at the Stone Bridge in Goldene Bären Strasse and follow these alleyways: Roter Herzfleck / Einhorngäßchen / Zur schönen Gelegenheit / Kuhgässel / Rote-Löwen-Straße (can you find the stone lion?)/ Poetengäßchen / Silberne-Fisch-Gasse / Gäßchen ohne End / Blauen Lilien Gasse. You can find the meaning of the street names below and the tour here → City map street names
  4. patrician towers count. Regensburg is the German city with the most medieval patrician towers. Around 20 of them are said to have been preserved, including the “Baumburg Tower” with a height of almost 28 meters and the “Golden Tower” with a height of 42 meters. I haven’t discovered all 20 yet, maybe you will. At the Baumburger Turm (Am Watmarkt 4) is the Dampfnudel Uli, a Regensburg original, almost as well known as the Historische Wurstkuchl.
  5. View house chapels. The houses of Regensburg’s patricians, i.e. the upper class from the 13th to 16th centuries, not only had towers, but also chapels – some of which can be viewed. For example in the Spaghetteria Aquino (St. Thomas’ Chapel, Am Römling 12), in the café “La Chapelle” on the Alter Kornmarkt or in the Étagère store in the Golden Tower at Wahlenstraße 16.
  6. Stroke the city mouse. This is supposed to bring good luck. The little city mouse is located at the “Neue Waag” building on Haidplatz (next to the window of the Wittl music store). Also take a look in the inner courtyard of the “Neue Waag”. Regensburg has many amusing stone figures, and it is often worth taking a look upwards. For example, the stag above the Hofbräuhaus or the pelican crowning the gable of the house named after him at Keplerstrasse 11. At Gumprecht’sches Haus in Neue-Waag-Gasse, there is even a young man pointing to his backside with his hand. Link to the city mouse
  7. Go into the green. Regensburg’s old town is surrounded by a green belt and parks. My favorite parks are Herzogspark, Villapark and Dörnbergpark. The Rosarium in Dörnbergpark is a great place to linger, especially when the roses are in bloom.
  8. Discover Stadtamhof. The Stadtamhof district was a town in its own right until 1924. The Stone Bridge was the border to Regensburg back then. Here you can take a wonderful stroll through the alleyways or along the river to the Grieser Spitz, where the Regen flows into the Danube. Drinking coffee at Mea or La Strada or a glass of wine at the Vinothek Vinosus is a bit like being on vacation. There is a small market here on Wednesdays.
  9. See Regensburg from above. For example, on the tower of the Dreieinigkeitskirche church or at the top of the Brückturm museum. The roof terrace at Galeria Kaufhof offers a great view.
  10. A bit of art & culture. Regensburg has many beautiful galleries, great art house cinemas, theaters, the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie, a jazz club, the Degginger, the Alte Mälzerei, summer festivals such as the Jazzweekend or Ostengassenfest, the Night in Blue, the beautiful open air cinema Cinema Paradiso or the Palazzo Festival. There really is enough program in the city.
