REGENSBURG FROM ABOVE!

From September 26 to December 26, 2020, you can ride the Ferris wheel at Ernst-Reuter-Platz on the Keplerareal from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day and enjoy the view over Regensburg. From a bird’s eye view, so to speak. We think that’s great, because we don’t have that many viewpoints. Or are there? We took a look at where you can see Regensburg from above.

Regensburg with a view:

  • Bridge Tower Museum. One of the bridge towers at the beginning of the Stone Bridge has been preserved. Where tower keepers once looked out for danger or debtors were locked up, visitors can now enjoy the view of the Stone Bridge from above.
  • Galeria Kaufhof roof terrace. The department store’s restaurant is located on the top floor. From the roof terrace you have a great view of the cathedral, Neupfarrplatz, the towers and the city, right across to the Winzerer Heights.

  • Tower of the Trinity Church. From the beginning of April to the last weekend in October, you can climb the eight-storey north tower of the Trinity Church (when it is not being renovated) and look out over Regensburg’s old town from above.
  • Trinity Mountain. Behind Stadtamhof lies the Steinweg-Pfaffenstein district with the Dreifaltigkeitsberg. If you go straight over the Protzenweiherbrücke bridge into Drehergasse and then Schwandorferstrasse, the Osterbergweg (a crossroads) leads up to the Dreifaltigkeitskirche church on the left. This church was built in 1713 to combat the rampant plague. From up there you have a wonderful view.

  • Winzerer heights. If you continue straight ahead at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche church past the Dreifaltigkeitsberg municipal cemetery, you come to Schelmengraben. Cross this road and follow the road “Auf der Winzerer Höhe”. Passing the silk plantation, you come to the Winzerer Höhen ridge, a local recreation area. There are still vineyards on the Danube here. A wonderful spot. Incidentally, there are still mulberry trees at the silk plantation, which King Ludwig I commissioned to be built in 1833, as attempts were actually made to breed silkworms here in order to produce silk for Europe.
  • Restaurant Storstad. Admittedly, this tip is not cheap, but we mention it anyway, because the Michelin-starred restaurant Storstad has one of the most spectacular roof terraces in Regensburg with a view of St. Peter’s Cathedral.

You can actually enjoy the view over the old town from many places, but unfortunately mostly privately, as the many roof terraces in the old town belong to apartments. If you would like to treat yourself to a room with a view: the Hotel Goliath and the Hotel Weidenhof have great roof terraces, the Hotel Orphée, for example, has rooms with a view of the cathedral.
