Otterbach Valley
EXCURSION TO THE OTTERBACH VALLEY!
Do you know the Otterbachtal? We were there again last weekend. This picturesque area near Altenthann is about 20 km east of Regensburg. The Otterbachtal is often compared to the better-known Höllbachtal, also known as the “little hell”. In fact, there is a lot of similarity between the two, which is due to the many stones and granite rocks in the course of the stream. The Otterbach valley is a mini version, so to speak.
The Otterbach itself is almost 20 km long. It rises as the so-called Süssenbach in the district of Cham and flows into the Danube after passing through Sulzbach an der Donau.
The section between Forstmühle and Hammermühle is well known. There is a popular hiking trail along the stream.
A starting point is right next to the beautiful Landgasthof Hammermühle, which is very close to the Fürstliche Thiergarten (address: Thiergartenstraße 1, 93093 Donaustauf). Hiking signs can be found on a tree above the Hammermühle. Another one is near Unterlichtenwalde. You can start a circular route at the hiking parking lot near Unterlichtenwald or in the center of the village at the bus stop. The trail is also signposted.
However, we started halfway along the Otterbachtal valley at the Waldgaststätte König. The inn is idyllically situated in the forest and is known to most Regensburgers by a different name, namely the legendary “Korea-Wirt”.
It is said that many years ago, during a Sunday sermon, the priest from Altenthann warned the faithful about the dissolute restaurant because, in his opinion, licentious parties were celebrated there. “It’s like Korea”, the priest is said to have railed. You should ask the König family, who have been running the pub for a long time, for more details.
Address: Bruckhaus 1, 93177 Altenthann | Public transport: Line 36, 37
From here, walk past the small ponds on the right at the Korea-Wirt and turn left at the Otterbach to take a leisurely walk along the left or right bank of the stream. There are more routes on the Regensburg Forest Association website:
