Organic dona market

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIO-DONAUMARKT.

Organic Donaumarkt Regensburg celebrates its second birthday!

More than two years ago, on March 18, 2022, market life returned to the Donaumarkt. Since then, there has been an organic weekly market there. For many decades, the Donaumarkt was a bustling market every Saturday until the market had to make way in 2012 and the square was rebuilt. The Donaumarkt was originally created by demolitions in the 1960s and 1970s. The city wanted to build a four-lane bridge here and make the old town car-friendly. The houses on Donaumarkt were demolished. But as you can see from the Iron Bridge, the ambitious plans and a four-lane bridge came to nothing: the Donaumarkt became a parking lot and served as a marketplace on Saturdays. The plans for a congress center on the Donaumarkt also failed again and again. Eventually, however, the Saturday market had to make way for the construction of the Museum of Bavarian History. Following the extensive renovation and construction of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte museum, Daniel Frost from Regensburg came up with the idea of revitalizing the empty square in front of the museum during lockdown. Since Regensburg has been a member of the Organic Cities Network since 2017, Regensburg is a model eco-region and the first Bio-Regio market took place in 2020, it was obvious to set up an organic weekly market. No sooner said than done.

Free day: Friday is market day!

The plan worked and the organic dona market opened in spring 2022. Since then, you can shop sustainably from regional and certified producers at Goldener Waller every Friday between 2 pm and 7.30 pm. In addition to fruit, vegetables and eggs, there is also cheese, meat, wine, oil, chocolate, soap and many other organic products for everyday needs.

But the organic donau market offers much more. It has developed into a meeting place on Friday afternoons, with plenty of food and drink, such as the wonderful Café Cabine, run by the ladies Bergmann & Braun. Every second and third Friday of the month, a knife sharpener comes to the market and sharpens kitchen knives, garden shears, lawnmower knives, pocket knives or your nail scissors on site. There is always a children’s program, such as face painting or music, and before Christmas you could even buy organic Christmas trees at the market. A great concept!

On April 5, 2024, the second birthday will be celebrated with various activities, henna and glitter tattoos for the children, music by Anarchist Brass Collectiv, DjVan3000 and an after-party in the pharmacy.

We say Happy Birthday to Bio-Donaumarkt! It’s great that you exist ♥
