Museum HDBG
HOUSE OF BAVARIAN HISTORY!
He stands four meters tall in the light-flooded foyer of the new museum on Donaumarkt: the Löwenbräu lion welcomes museum visitors to the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte. In the past, the large papier-mâché lion with a beer mug in its paw toasted the Oktoberfest guests from the Löwenbräu tent. Now the symbolic lion, which is not only the heraldic animal of the Löwenbrauerei but also of the Wittelsbach family, is in Regensburg. Under a Bavarian sky, complete with glass rhombuses.
In Regensburg’s new museum, 1000 exhibits are displayed on almost 2500m² – making the House of Bavarian History larger than the House of History in Bonn, for example. On display are 9 generations of Bavarians from the 1st generation from 1800 to 1825, when Bavaria became a kingdom, to the generation from 2000 to 2025. A history theater with 30 stages. 8 cultural cabinets also scrutinize typical Bavarian phenomena such as dialect, FC Bayern and folk festivals. You can find very special pieces such as the head of the Further dragon, a knight’s armor from the Landshut wedding or the balloon from Naila, with which a family managed to escape from the GDR to Bavaria in 1979. But 1500 personal mementos from citizens also found their place in the House of Bavarian History, such as a dirndl from the former Munich Oktoberfest boss Gabriele Weishäupl. In addition to big stories, small, personal ones from Bavaria are also told.
In the middle section of the permanent exhibition entitled “How Bavaria became a free state and what makes it so special”, a road over the Brenner Pass has even been recreated with automobile icons from the 1950s. In the Goggomobil, which leads the motorcade, you can take a seat in person and travel through time.
Not only that, but you can also sit in the old plenary chamber of the Bavarian state parliament with its old lectern and original seven by seven meter tapestry. On original seating, of course. And you can watch and vote in three historical political debates – for example the crucifix law from 1995. According to museum director Dr. Richard Loibl, the furniture, the carpet and the old cars are among the bulkiest objects in the permanent exhibition. But it gets even bulkier, there is even a five-ton truck in the museum: a locomobile had to be lifted into the museum through an opening in the wall using a heavy-duty transporter and a special lifting platform.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum will feature an exciting 360-degree multivision, a large room for special exhibitions, a museum store all in gold and a real Bavarian pub including a beer garden. Incidentally, the Regensburg city mouse will be giving guided tours of the museum. In 2020, the Bavariathek, a media education training center, will open right next to the museum.
From 27 September 2019 to 8 March 2020, the Bavarian State Exhibition 2019 “One Hundred Treasures from a Thousand Years” will take place in the new museum in Regensburg.
