Microadventure
SMALL CURSES!
You hear the word “microadventure” more and more often. But what is it anyway? The term comes from the British adventurer Alastair Humphreys, who published his book “Microadventures” in 2014 and is considered the creator of the term. Microadventures are small adventures on your own doorstep. Without having to travel far, microadventures are short, simple, local, inexpensive and sustainable, yet enriching and exciting. Small escapes from everyday life.
We have written down our 5 great micro adventures for you:
Climbing the alpine trail
The Alpine Steig stretches between Schönhofen and Eilsbrunn. The trail is marked with a blue rectangle. It is part of the Jura Trail and is located in a unique landscape conservation area. The fantastic rocky landscape is indeed somewhat reminiscent of the foothills of the Alps, but this trail is not really alpine. Nevertheless, you should definitely be sure-footed and wear sturdy footwear for this micro-alpine trail. From the summit cross, you have a wonderful view of the Jura landscape.
Go on a kayak or canoe tour
There are wonderful river landscapes around Regensburg and a boat tour is the ideal combination of adventure, nature and relaxation. The Naab and the Regen are perfect for this. There are also various rental companies here, such as the Penk boat rental, Kanuschorsch in Kallmünz/Traidendorf, the boat rental in Pielnhofen and many more.
Explore caves
Grab a flashlight and be a spelunker for a day. There are a few caves around Regensburg. How about a robber’s cave, for example? Between Etterzhausen and Penk, above the Naab on the Jurasteig, there is a real robbers’ cave.
The cave has a diameter of 24 meters and was formed during the Jurassic period and later served as a starting point for raids. Click here for the excursion tip Robbers’ cave.
There are several caves close to Essing in the Altmühltal:
The Schulerloch stalactite cave was home to the Neanderthals 50,000 years ago.
The Klausenhöhlen caves can be found above Essing. When you cross the Tatzlwurm bridge from Essing, a path leads slightly to the left across a meadow into the forest. If you turn left again here, you will reach the Klausen caves on the right after about 10 minutes, which were also used as living caves in the Stone Age.
Admire the Pfaffenstein
This impressive natural monument can be found near Reichenbach am Regen, around 25 km north-east of Regensburg. It is located between the Reichenbach monastery and the Walderbach monastery on the Goldsteig trail.
This rocky sphere probably played an important role as a place of worship for the Celts. The cross on the rock was erected in 1964.
Explore castles
We are certainly not short of castles. Our favorite castle is Prunn Castle, which stands on an almost vertical Jura rock high above the Altmühltal valley. The so-called “Prunn Codex”, the fourth oldest complete manuscript of the Song of the Nibelungs, was found at the castle. There is a permanent exhibition about it in the castle. Today, the manuscript is housed in the Bavarian State Library. A few kilometers further on, there is also Randeck Castle in Essing as well as Rosenburg Castle, the ruins of Trachenstein Castle and the ruins of Rabenstein Castle near Riedenburg.
However, there are also castles in Laaber, Kallmünz, Wolfsegg and very close to Regensburg in Donaustauf.
The medieval castle of Donaustauf was first mentioned in a document in 1132. For a time, the castle served as the residence of the Regensburg bishops. In the 14th century, however, the bishop had to pledge the castle due to financial difficulties. Take a look inside the Hunger Tower – it’s an adventure in itself.
