Jura trail loop

ON THE WOLF TRAIL TO WOLFSEGG CASTLE!

Do you actually know the Jurasteig? This is a quality hiking trail that leads through the beautiful landscape of the Bavarian Jura in 13 stages. The start and finish of this circular hiking trail is Kelheim. The Jura Trail runs for 237 km through the districts of Kelheim, Regensburg, Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz and Amberg-Sulzbach. Wonderful views of the heights and valleys of the Danube, Altmühl, Weisser and Schwarzer Laber, Lauterach, Vils and Naab, castles, fortresses, monasteries and rock pinnacles are included!
We have wanted to walk the stages of the Jurasteig for a long time, but somehow it hasn’t worked out yet.
It’s a good thing that there are so-called Jurasteig loops in addition to the Jurasteig! These are additional circular hiking trails along the Jurasteig. There are 18 loops in total.
Last weekend, we were once again on the lookout for a nice excursion destination. We came across loop trail 17: the Wolfsfährte zur Weissen Frau.
That sounds mysterious. So let’s go there!

The loop trail: wolf trail to the White Lady

The start of this approximately 10 km hike is in Pielenhofen. There is a parking lot on the Naab opposite the Pielenhofen monastery in Angerstraße, which serves as our starting point. Shortly after this, at the crossroads, we turn left into Dettenhofener Straße and walk straight ahead. After approx. 200 m, we turn left uphill on a narrow path, where we see the signs for the Jurasteig and the blue and yellow hiking sign for the Jurasteig Wolfsfährte loop.

From here, it is very easy to follow the hiking sign “Wolfsfährte zur weissen Frau”, the Jurasteig loops are well signposted. With a little attention, you will find a sign every few meters or sometimes a sticker on a traffic sign.
Only a few meters after entering the loop on the Jura Trail, you can decide at a fork in the path in which direction you want to walk the loop: right or left through the forest. We kept to the right, as the path would have been quite a way uphill on the left.
The first section leads through a beech forest, which is of course particularly beautiful in the fall. But you soon come to sunny clearings and country lanes.

The first hill is reached at the village of Wall, with its 1000-year-old Romanesque church. After Wall, the route continues a little further to the left along paved paths towards Wolfsegg.

After a few minutes, you can already see the church and castle of Wolfsegg. The village can look back on 700 years of history. Wolfsegg Castle was first mentioned in a contract of sale in 1367: “Unser vestt Wolfsekk” (Our vest Wolfsekk) can be read there. The small aristocratic castle from the late Middle Ages is enthroned on a rock in the middle of the village and is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the region.

The legend of the white woman

The legend of the WHITE WOMAN is closely linked to Wolfsegg Castle. She is said to haunt the castle, which has made it famous beyond the region.
The story of the White Lady of Wolfsegg is said to have its roots in the 15th century. It is said to be about Countess Klara von Helfenstein, who was married to the lord of the castle, Ulrich von Laaber. Ulrich used his wife Klara to settle a dispute in his favor: she was supposed to make eyes at his opponent. But Klara fell in love with his opponent instead.
Offended by the betrayal, Ulrich had his wife brutally murdered. Since this tragedy, she has haunted the walls of the castle as the “White Lady”. No one knows for sure whether the story of the lady of the castle is true or not. It is said that she still appears as a ghost in the castle.

Incidentally, the path does not lead directly to the castle, but back to the left. However, if you wish, you can of course make a detour to the castle. However, Wolfsegg Castle and the castle museum can only be visited at weekends during the summer months (May 1 to October 3, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm).

The loop trail leads back over field paths and at the end again quite a way through the forest to the beginning of the fork in the trail. Here we turn right back to Pielenhofen.

Pielenhofen Monastery

Depending on your walking speed, you will need 2.5-3 hours for this hike (9.5 km, 222 vertical meters). You should wear hiking boots in the fall, as it can be very muddy in some places. Please also bear in mind that it gets dark early at the moment and allow enough time.

You can find all 18 loop trails of the Jurasteig on jurasteig.de
