TAVERNS AROUND REGENSBURG!
It should be no secret by now that we love outings. For us, a good excursion naturally includes a decent stop for refreshments. There is no shortage of pubs in and around Regensburg, but everyone has their own favorites. This year we present our favorite pubs to you. Of course, this is a subjective selection, but since we are often asked for tips, we will reveal our favorites in the countryside in the first part of our pub series.
Our tips for nice pubs near Regensburg – Part 1.
Zirngibl Inn in Bad Abbach
This traditional inn has been around since 1880. In the Middle Ages, a toll station of the Bavarian Dukes of Wittelsbach once stood on the site of today’s Gasthaus Zirngibl. Michael Hofer and his wife Alexandra Richard have been running the inn since 2017.
The Gasthaus Zirngibl is located in the middle of Bad Abbach, at the end of the pedestrian zone, not far from the Danube and the leisure island. It offers space for 150 people in the à la carte business, spread over four different parlors. In addition, the restaurant has a large hall that can accommodate up to 200 people.
In summer, the beer garden lined with chestnut trees invites you to linger. In addition to a large selection of traditional dishes, there are delicious game dishes and even vegan dishes.Zirngibl InnAt the market 2993077 Bad Abbach
Excursion tip: Paul-Pemsel-Steig. There is a very beautiful hike between Bad Abbach and Oberndorf. Start at the parking lot below the Charbonnières-les-Bains bridge, the W1 trail and the Jurasteig trail are signposted.
Via the W1 high-level trail and the Jurasteig trail, the route leads over the Danube valley towards Oberndorf to the rock pulpits on the Hanselberg. The way back leads leisurely along the Danube via Oberndorf to Bad Abbach. Great views of the limestone pinnacles included.
Historic hospital for the poor in Donaustauf
Markt Donaustauf, just outside Regensburg, was already well known in the Middle Ages. The medieval Donaustauf Castle was mentioned in documents as early as 1132. In 1812, the ruins and the whole of Donaustauf went to the Princes of Thurn und Taxis, who not only built a summer palace (today’s Fürstengarten), but also a hospital for the poor for old and sick people.
“The poorhouse or hospital is now located in front of the upper gate, near St. Salvator on the left on the road to the Walhalla,” says the local history book of Donaustauf.
When the dilapidated building was put up for sale by the municipality and was threatened with demolition, Christian Blüml bought the house and lovingly renovated it. Now the hospital for the poor is a small, fine pub with a beer garden.

Excursion tip: You can cycle comfortably along the Danube cycle path to Donaustauf (12km) and visit the castle ruins or the Walhalla, for example.
Röhrl restaurant in Eilsbrunn
Who hasn’t heard of the “oldest tavern in the world” near Regensburg? There is evidence of a tavern and brewery in Eilsbrunn as early as the 16th century. In 1658, shortly after the Thirty Years’ War, the tavern and brewery came into the possession of the Röhrl family. Muk Röhrl is now the 11th generation to run the tavern.
The heart of the restaurant is the wood-paneled dining room with a round bench, but there is also a hall, a side room and an adjoining room.
The roast pork here still comes from the crackling Wamsler wood-fired oven from 1929 – it doesn’t get any cozier than this!
Of course there is also a large beer garden. A hotel next door belongs to the family business.

Excursion tip: If you walk along the small road “Am Alpinersteig” on the left behind the restaurant, a path on the right leads up to the Alpinen Steig. Follow the Jurasteig sign. From the summit cross on the Alpinen Steig near Schönhofen, you have a great view of the Jura landscape.
Gasthaus Hummel in Wischenhofen
The Hummel family has been running the inn on the edge of the Naab Valley in Wischenhofen for over 100 years. In addition to the rustic part of the inn, the Old Hall, there is also a gourmet restaurant, as the inn has evolved with each generation. The gourmet parlor has even been awarded a Michelin star. The Alter Saal, however, serves down-to-earth inn cuisine with regional dishes. On Sunday afternoons, the pub menu is expanded with classic Sunday roasts. Guest rooms for overnight stays are also available. Gasthaus HummelHeitzenhofenerStraße 1693182Wischenhofen
Country inn “Zum Birnthaler” in Krachenhausen / Kallmünz
The Landgasthof Birntaler is located directly on the Naabtal cycle path, between Heitzenhofen and Kallmünz, and is a classic restaurant with home-style cooking, a beer garden and a playground. Five double or single rooms and two four-bed rooms.

Excursion tip: Kallmünz is one of our favorite places in the district of Regensburg. It’s not for nothing that Kallmünz is called the “Pearl of the Naab Valley”. Just stroll through the pretty alleyways or climb up to the castle ruins. You can find a detailed report here: Kallmünz
Jagawirt in Aumbach
Last year, friends took us to the Jagawirt. This traditional inn is the heart of the pretty little village of Aumbach, a district of Rettenbach, at the southernmost tip of the district of Cham, not far from Wörth an der Donau. Here, too, young innkeepers cook regional dishes with passion. Sometimes fresh game from the local hunt, well-matured beef, local lamb or fresh fish, accompanied by healthy vegetables, are served. The menu therefore changes regularly depending on what is on offer.
