EXCURSION TO THE HÖLLBACH VALLEY!

Once to hell and back.

Today we are taking you on a journey to one of the hidden beauties of the Upper Bavarian Forest. Just half an hour’s drive from Regensburg lies the idyllic Höllbach Valley (also known as “Hölle”), which seems to have come straight out of a fairytale book. The valley is located four kilometers southwest of Falkenstein between Brennberg and Rettenbach in the Falkensteiner Vorwald forest and is a popular excursion destination and local recreation area – no matter what time of year. The Höllbach springs from many smaller streams near Wiesenfelden and makes its way through rocky forest gorges and colorful meadow valleys until it finally flows into the Danube near Wörth. This short hike starts at the P1 or P2 parking lot near Postfelden behind the Postfelden reservoir (address Postfelden 20).

For hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers, the Höllbach Valley offers a network of well-marked hiking trails that lead through the picturesque landscape. Follow the “Hölle” circular hiking trail. The signs with the number 149 will guide you reliably through Hell.

The circular walk is approx. 3.5 km long and takes about 1 hour. At the parking lot there is also a map with all the circular hiking trails and explanations about the Höllbach valley. First you walk across meadows, you can already hear the Höllbach here.

As soon as you turn right at the “Hell” sign and enter the forest, you can also see it, first very quietly, later a little wilder with small waterfalls and cascades under the mighty granite blocks.

It is precisely these huge rock formations and cliffs, some of which are piled on top of each other, that make up “Hell”. The impressive shape of these rocks bears the beautiful name “wool sack weathering” because they are stacked on top of each other like wool sacks. These rock formations provide an ideal habitat for many rare mosses and lichens.

The granite blocks weathered during the last ice age from the granite bedrock formed around 320 million years ago to form a sea of blocks. These rock formations provide an ideal habitat for many rare mosses and lichens.

These rocks are a great adventure for children.
For the hike through the Höllbach valley and especially through Hell, you will definitely need sturdy shoes.

Afterwards, of course, you can also stop for a bite to eat, for example here:

  • Rettenbacher Hof, Dorfstraße 18, 93191 Rettenbach (inn & butcher’s shop)
  • Hofstube Röhrenhof, Röhrenhof 1, 93191 Rettenbach
  • Jagawirt zu Aumbach, Aumbach 117, 93191 Rettenbach

It is best to visit the Höllbach Valley during the week – it can be very busy at weekends and on public holidays. There are also longer hiking trails through the Höllbach Valley, for example from Brennberg (length 13 km). So pack your hiking boots and set off to discover this natural gem – it’s worth it!

Until next time, when we go on another voyage of discovery through Regensburg and the surrounding area.
