Fountain trio
SPECIAL FOUNTAINS!
Did you know that we have three fountains in Regensburg that belong to a fountain cycle? There are no fewer than 28 fountains in the old town. Three of them are dedicated to virtues, namely justice, fortitude and peace. All three fountains are pedestal fountains with an ornate wrought-iron grille. Peace, justice and fortitude were naturally of great importance to the imperial city in the 17th century.
You can see which three fountains belong to the fountain cycle here:
Justitia Fountain (Haidplatz)
The Justitia fountain on Haidplatz is a magnificent Baroque fountain created in 1656 by the sculptor Leoprand Hilmer and used to supply the city with water. There are also “fountains of justice” in other cities in Germany. In the middle of the octagonal basin stands Justitia, Justice, on a stone plinth, with a sword in one hand and a pair of scales in the other. The figure is surrounded by a wrought-iron grille. The Justitia fountain is the most famous of the trio.
Fortitudo Fountain (fish market)
The Fortitudo Fountain at the fish market from 1610 stands for fortitude and strength. In the middle of the rectangular pedestal fountain stands a young man leaning on the Regensburg city coat of arms and holding a fish in his hand. He has placed his left foot on a dolphin. Water can be pumped out of the fountain from two pipes on the left and right. In some records, this fountain is also incorrectly referred to as the Roland Fountain.
Peace Fountain (Old Town Hall courtyard)
The Peace Fountain from 1661 is located in the inner courtyard of the Old Town Hall. This fountain has a hexagonal trough. The splendidly dressed woman in the middle of the fountain stands for religious peace and holds a bronze palm branch in one hand and a pair of doves in the other. The city’s coat of arms can also be found here, on the outside of the fountain, where the imperial coat of arms is also located.
