FALL FESTIVALS AND FALL MARKETS!

In the fall, it is especially fun to stroll through the traditional markets – preferably in golden fall weather – and be inspired by the goods, crafts and plants on offer. Winterizing the garden on the last beautiful days and planting for next spring is just as much a part of autumn as crafting on the first cool evenings and decorating the house and yard accordingly. We can get a colorful bouquet of new ideas and inspiration at the upcoming markets to sweeten the coming cold season. Here are a few of the larger markets that are perfect for a trip and are sure to have something to offer the whole family:

On Friday, October 11, 2024: Autumn festival at the Bio-Donaumarkt in Regensburg

The organic Danube market has been held on Fridays from 2 p.m. since 2022. The Donaumarkt was previously a lively market every Saturday for many decades, until the market had to give way in 2012 and the square was rebuilt.
In addition to the organic market, the autumn festival will feature lots of treats, a children’s program and music.

On the weekend of October 12 to 13, 2024: Autumn festival and Sunday shopping in Regensburg’s old town

The Fall Festival in Regensburg is taking place for the 25th time this year. In addition to a stage, there will be an autumn market on Neupfarrplatz and St. Kassians-Platz from 10:00 to 18:00.

On Sunday, October 20, 2024: Traditional church fair in Regenstauf

Regenstauf was elevated to market status in 1326. This was associated with the privilege of holding a permanent market. Special market rights still apply on some Sundays to this day. The third market Sunday in Regenstauf is the Kirchweihmarkt, which is also known as the “Helfermarkt”. The end of October used to be the last chance for the rural population to buy a new coat for All Saints’ Day. This led to the creation of the church fair market for All Saints’ Day.
From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., you can marvel at the goods on offer at the colorful stalls in the town by the rain and, of course, purchase them. This market also goes back to an old tradition, as the Kirchweih or church consecration festival has been celebrated since the Middle Ages as a festival to mark the annual return of the day a church was consecrated. The day of consecration has the status of a high festival in the respective church. In German-speaking countries, there are many regional names such as Kirwa, Kerwe, Kerwa, Kurwa, Kärwa, Kirb, Kerb, Kerm or Kilbi or Kirmes. In Austria, South Tyrol and Old Bavaria also Kirta(g), Kischta or Kirchtag, Swiss High German Kilbi or Chilbi, Banat Swabian Kerweih. The names are as varied as the offerings at the respective markets.

On Sunday, October 27, 2024: Traditional church fair market and Sunday shopping in Schwandorf

This market has been held directly on the pretty market square in the district town since 1299. It was traditionally the second fair of the year and was celebrated on “Simon and Judah”, i.e. October 28. It went down in Schwandorf’s fair history as the “October church consecration market”. Among the locals, however, it is usually referred to as the “All Saints’ Market”, as the regional gardeners sell grave decorations for All Saints’ Day on this market Sunday. It is therefore also jokingly referred to as “Coat Sunday”. Once again this year, a large number of vendors with a wide range of goods – including All Saints’ Day arrangements, plants, garden decorations, iron furniture, handicrafts, wood and basketry, clothing, headgear, scarves, leather goods, watches and jewelry, baking tins and kitchen utensils, spices, tea, soups, sweets, Mediterranean delicacies, horse sausages and various snacks – are on site for the “Kirchweih-Markt”. The stores are open from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm, the Kirchweih market on the market square from 10.00 am.

Thursday, October 31, 2024 Spitzlmarkt in Kelheim

And if you still haven’t had enough of strolling through markets in – hopefully – beautiful weather, you can head to Kelheim on the last day of “golden” October, Thursday 31st, to the traditional Spitzlmarkt in the picturesque old town. From 8.00 to 17.00, the largest goods market in the district of Kelheim offers everything a visitor’s heart desires. From wooden kitchen utensils to clothing and above all, of course, the traditional “Spitzeln”, a diamond-shaped pastry.

Sunday, November 17, 2024 Art and craft market in Lappersdorf

The “Lappersdorf Art and Craft Market” takes place in the large hall of the Golden Aurelium from 10.00 to 17.00 with free admission. Numerous exhibitors will once again be offering their diverse goods for sale: various jewelry, decorations for the home and garden, fruit spreads, soaps, herbal and stone pine cushions, Christmas decorations, Advent wreaths, hats and scarves, paper crafts, Christmas tree baubles, baby and toddler clothes, sewn, knitted and embroidered items, ceramics, beekeeping products and much more. Of course, there will also be plenty to eat and drink. Coffee and cake, drinks and hearty snacks will be on offer.
