FALL DREAMS AND TOURS!

The hot summer days are over. At last – some people will groan and breathe a sigh of relief! But of course it’s a bit of a shame when the days get shorter again and the nights get cooler. But before autumn paints over the landscape with its bright colors, we still have Indian summer. Although it is often referred to in this way, the term does not come from old women. The word “old” comes from the fact that it is the last part of summer, while the word “Weiber” is derived from “Weiben”, or weaving. This refers to the typical flying threads and weaving of spiders at this time of year. Meteorologists use it to describe a singularity, a phase of consistent weather in autumn, often at the end of September and October, which is characterized by a stable area of high pressure and a warm end to the summer. Be that as it may, it heralds the end of summer. That’s why you should definitely set off again by bike, scooter, motorcycle or even on foot to discover our beautiful surroundings and the original places and corners with their culinary delights. We have put together a few tips for you:

A quick trip to Nepal

Just 25 minutes from the cathedral The Nepal Temple in Wiesent has long been a “must-visit” destination for many Regensburgers. If you still haven’t made it to this Himalayan park – or not again this year – you should do it quickly. Because the gates will close on 13 October 2024 and then it will be a long wait until spring comes and the pavilion shines in the sun again and the colorful Tibet flags wave to visitors from afar. Or to Korea

Just under 20 km from the old town Not far away, however, there is a less exotic but all the more rustic restaurant: the Koreawirt in the picturesque Otterbachtal valley. There is much speculation as to where the forest restaurant and its operator got its unusual name. The owner of the farm and forest tavern, Franz König, goes by the name “Brückl-König” as well as “Korea Wirt”. The first name is explained by the fact that the hermitage has always been called Bruckhäusl. But Franz König can’t really explain why it became the Korea Wirt. However, there is a rumor that persists and which we explain in our hiking tips around the Otterbach Valley reveal. Waldgaststätte König “Koreawirt” Otterbachtal – Bruckhaus 1 – 93177 Altenthann

Direction Thiergarten

Just 12 km east of Regensburg Surrounded by woods and meadows, close to the Danube cycle path and directly on the European long-distance hiking trail, the Landgasthof Hammermühle is just a stone’s throw from the Thiergarten golf course and the Walhalla. With its idyllic beer garden, it offers a wonderfully peaceful place for a snack, coffee and cake or just a beer right next to the babbling little waterfall of the Otterbach stream, which meanders along the inn’s garden. Zum Frauenhäusl – where fox and hare say good night and the landlord says welcome

It’s just under 20 minutes by car via Sinzing to the rustic “Frauenhäusl”. This is also a nice excursion by bike – no matter what kind. In the cozy forest restaurant you can spend wonderfully relaxing hours in the beer garden or in the fireplace lounge. The Hamberger family serves a hot meal from Tuesday to Saturday, and on Sundays three different roasts await hungry day-trippers at lunchtime. From 2 p.m. the host family offers homemade cakes, coffee and snacks. Frauenhäusl 1 – 93309 Kelheim

Kiosk Ludwig – with a view as far as Regensburg

Our next tip may not be a real café, but the Kiosk Ludwig offers the most magnificent view you could wish for, as it is located at the top, right next to the Walhalla. Here, the former owners of the much-loved but now defunct Cafe Rosenfleckerl in Bach an der Donau offer everything your heart desires and make a romantic sunset excursion on the steps of the Greek temple high above the Danube the perfect experience. Open until the end of October.

Matting

Almost the same time by bike and car – 20 minutes from the cathedral The Zunftstüberl in Matting is also easy to reach by bike – probably even in the same time from the old town as by car. Late summer is particularly pleasant under the old chestnut trees. A beer garden, just like in the “good old days”. The beer is nice and cool and the snacks are just as they should be. In the historic hall from the 16th century, you can even admire a real rarity that is unlikely to be found anywhere else: On the defiant walls you can see 400-year-old frescoes depicting figures in traditional costume and scenes of the individual guilds. It is said to have been left behind by wandering boys as compensation for the coal they were unable to pay. The oldest murals in the Upper Palatinate. Just a few meters further on, you can still cross the Danube on one of the last yaw rope ferries and continue your bike or motorcycle tour on the other bank. A very special experience, thanks to the tireless efforts of the people of Mattingen. The village, with its oldest stone farmhouses in Bavaria, has a relaxed and pleasant village atmosphere that is rarely found anywhere else. Kallmünz

There are also wonderful spots in the other direction from Regensburg – for example in the Naab Valley: our last tip for an excursion with a culinary highlight goes to Kallmünz. Yes, there are of course many cafés, an ice cream parlor, restaurants and – last but not least – the Bürstenbinder. The smallest pub in the Upper Palatinate. Known not only for its home-brewed Zoigl beer, the “Gänsbügl”, but also for its specialty, the popular “Bauchstecherla”. Once you’ve eaten your fill, you can also enjoy a home-brewed digestive aid in the form of a delicious distillate. Bürstenbinder – Am Graben 5 – 93183 Kallmünz

For coffee afterwards, we recommend strolling a few meters further over the bridge to the town center. The view is not the only thing worth the walk – the town is known for its picturesque corners and interesting galleries. Just after the narrow stone bridge, there is another feast for the eyes on the left at the Schmidwöhr parking lot: a restored Peugeot 201 Camionette that has not only been converted to electric drive. Its owner, Kurt Rosenmeier, has also converted it into a mobile coffee station and serves passionately prepared espresso, cappuccino and café crème (and more). He can be found here on Saturdays and Sundays and is otherwise in action at events in the greater Regensburg area with “probably the most beautiful coffee machine in the world”.
