EXCURSIONS

Out of the city – country trips and short escapes.

We love excursions! Whether it’s a short or longer hike, a bike tour or a weekend vacation – every now and then we just have to get out and about.
Precisely because we like excursions so much, we write about little getaways and give tips for excursions here on RegensburgNow.de from time to time. In addition to the well-known excursion destinations, such as the Walhalla near Donaustauf or the Befreiungshalle near Kelheim, you can find lots of other tips here. You can find all the articles below.

Here are our RegensburgNow tips:

Nepal Himalayan temple near Wiesent. One of our favorite places near Regensburg. The Nepalese pavilion from Expo 2000 in Hanover was rebuilt here. Surrounded by a wonderful little park, Asian art and bridges, this is a wonderful place! A piece of Asia near Regensburg. →NepalHimalaya Park

Kallmünz is a real gem on the Naab. We love trips to beautiful Kallmünz, the castle, the rocks, sculptures and alleyways. The artist Wassily Kandinsky once spent a summer here. No wonder. Worth seeing and a curiosity is the “house without a roof”, which was built directly into a cave in the rock. Our favorite pubs in Kallmünz are the Goldener Löwe and the Bürstenbinder (both also offer overnight accommodation).

Höllbach valley near Brennberg. Hiking trail with forest clearing, large stones in the stream bed, meter-high rock formations and granite rocks, in between the torrent… heavenly beautiful in hell! →Höllbach valley

Bicycle tours. Our favorite route is the bike tour to Kallmünz (28km). The town has already been mentioned. Cycle along the Danube cycle path to Mariaort, then take the Cross the railroad bridge and continue along the Naabtal cycle path to Kallmünz. At Mariaort, you can alternatively take the Schwarze-Laber cycle path towards Sinzing. This is also a wonderful route and the Laber is also very beautiful.

The Alpine Steig. The Alpine Steig stretches between Schönhofen and Eilsbrunn. The trail is marked with a blue rectangle. It is part of the Jura Trail and lies in a unique landscape conservation area. The fantastic rocky landscape is indeed somewhat reminiscent of the Alpine foothills, but this trail is not really alpine. From the summit cross, you have a wonderful view of the Jura landscape. → Excursion to Schönhofen

Explore caves. Grab a flashlight and be a spelunker for a day. There are a few caves around Regensburg. How about a robber’s cave, for example? Between Etterzhausen and Penk, above the Naab on the Jurasteig, there is a real robbers’ cave.
The cave has a diameter of 24 meters and was formed during the Jurassic period and later served as a starting point for raids. Click here for the excursion tip →Robbers’ cave.

The Pfaffenstein. This impressive natural monument can be found near Reichenbach am Regen, around 25 km north-east of Regensburg. It is located between Reichenbach Monastery and Walderbach Monastery on the Goldsteig trail.
This rocky sphere probably already played an important role as a place of worship for the Celts. The cross on the rock was erected in 1964.

Castles. We are certainly not short of castles. Our favorite castle is Prunn Castle, which stands on an almost vertical Jura rock high above the Altmühltal valley. The so-called “Prunn Codex”, the fourth oldest complete manuscript of the Song of the Nibelungs, was found at the castle. There is a permanent exhibition about it in the castle. Today, the manuscript is housed in the Bavarian State Library. A few kilometers further on, there is also Randeck Castle in Essing as well as Rosenburg Castle, the ruins of Trachenstein Castle and the ruins of Rabenstein Castle near Riedenburg.

However, there are also castles in Laaber, Kallmünz, Wolfsegg and very close to Regensburg in Donaustauf.
The medieval castle of Donaustauf was first mentioned in a document in 1132. For a time, the castle served as the residence of the Regensburg bishops. In the 14th century, however, the bishop had to pledge the castle due to financial difficulties. Take a look inside the Hunger Tower – it’s an adventure in itself.
