EXCURSION TIPS FOR THE UPPER PALATINATE!

Why wander far and wide when there are so many beautiful excursion destinations nearby! As much as we love Regensburg, we also love exploring the surrounding area.
If you need a change of scenery, there’s plenty to discover in the Upper Palatinate. And if you still have no idea where to go on your next excursion, you can get some inspiration from us here.

Here are the RegensburgNow tips for 5 beautiful excursion destinations in the Upper Palatinate:

Nepal Himalaya Pavilion

The Nepal-Himalaya pavilion originally stood at the expo 2000 in Hanover. After the world exhibition, the pavilion was dismantled into its individual parts and brought to the Upper Palatinate, to Wiesent, where it was rebuilt true to the original. The beautiful pavilion has been open to visitors in Wiesent since 2003. A park was created around the pavilion, with a variety of different plants, a pond, bridges, Buddha figures of a snake goddess and much more. New areas have gradually been added in recent years: for example, a Chinese garden with a replica of a Chinese pavilion and a gate of honor or Little Bhutan with a temple and many Buddhist symbols. There is even a tea house.
A wonderful place, not just for Asia fans.
Open: Sunday and Monday, public holidays 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. (April 27 to October 9, 2022, €10 admission), Saturday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. (except July 16)
Address: Martiniplatte, 93109 Wiesent

Kallmünz

The name Kallmünz inevitably brings to mind the phrase: “The pearl of the Naab Valley”. The Naab and Vils rivers unite here in this picturesque place on the rock. You can stroll through the winding alleyways, hike up to the castle ruins, eat “Bauchstechala” at the Bürstenbinder and relax. Kallmünz is considered an artists’ village, not least because the famous painter Wassily Kandinsky once spent a summer here with his then fiancée Gabriele Münter. You can sit in the rock garden in the “Münter Stuben”. Or you can stay overnight, for example at Raitenbuch Castle. A magical place, this Kallmünz!

The castle complex was reopened as a hotel in 1998 after extensive renovations, and in 2019 the castle was converted into a clinic.

King Otto dripstone cave

One of the most beautiful stalactite caves in Germany is located in the Upper Palatinate, in Velburg. Like most caves, the König-Otto stalactite cave was discovered by chance. A shepherd was chasing a fox and found the beautiful stalactite cave, which was later made accessible to visitors. The discovery was made on the name day of King Otto of Bavaria – so a name for the cave was quickly found.
Guided tours are available from 1 April to 31 October, except Mondays, from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm (admission €7). Highway A3 exit Velburg/Lengenfeld, direction Velburg, then signposted.
