Culture weekend
A WEEKEND IN REGENSBURG FOR CULTURE FANS!
Are you a total culture enthusiast and would like to spend a weekend fully immersed in Regensburg’s cultural scene, whether as a tourist or a local?
Then we have a few great tips for you on how to spend a real cultural weekend in Regensburg.
Here are our tips for a weekend full of culture in Regensburg:
We start on Friday afternoon. We start in Bertoldstraße at the Leerer Beutel.
Municipal Gallery in the Empty Bag
The stately “Leerer Beutel” building was formerly used as a granary and has been used as a municipal gallery building since it was completely renovated in 1980. The Leerer Beutel also houses a restaurant of the same name, the Regensburg jazz club and the Filmgalerie cinema. So a lot of culture in one place.
The Städtische Galerie offers an attractive program on several floors and reflects a panorama of primarily East Bavarian art. A wide variety of techniques are represented: from painting to sculptures and installations to photography. There are also temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st century art.

New Kunstverein Regensburg
Schwanenplatz is located around the corner from the Leerer Beutel. This is where the Neue Kunstverein Regensburg shows contemporary art by international, national and regional artists. The exhibitions alternate or combine painting, graphics, objects, sculpture, photography and installations.

Synagogue
The route continues from Schwanenplatz to Brixener Hof. This is where the Jewish Community Center with Synagogue, as it is officially called, is located. The architectural competition for the building was won in 2015 by the Volker Staab office from Berlin, which has constructed a number of unusual buildings in Germany in recent years. The foundation stone was laid in 2016 and the new synagogue in Regensburg was opened on February 27, 2019. This is no coincidental date, as 500 years earlier, in February 1519, the Regensburg council expelled its Jewish population from the city. The Jewish quarter, including the synagogue, was completely destroyed.
Now, over 500 years later, this modern building enriches Regensburg’s old town: with a bright clinker brick façade, the corner building at Brixener Hof rises up and at the same time blends in smoothly with the cityscape. The glass and metal dome that crowns the new building is striking. The main entrance leads through a small inner courtyard, and to the side you can look into the glazed library.
A gold-colored ribbon of lettering floats above the courtyard in the open air. The artist Tom Kristen designed this wonderful work of art. On closer inspection, you can recognize a poem by the Jewish poet Rose Ausländer. Lines from her poem ‘Together’ have been immortalized in the artwork in her handwriting.

Jazz club
Finally, we return to the Leerer Beutel, which is also home to the Filmgalerie cinema and the Regensburg Jazz Club. This is one of the largest and most successful jazz clubs in Germany, which has made a name for itself internationally and brings talented musicians and stars from all over the world to Regensburg. Many top-class musicians have already performed at the jazz club. In addition to established artists, the jazz club also brings up-and-coming talent to the stage and offers unknown talents a great forum for sessions.

After an already culturally rich Friday, we start Saturday with a leisurely coffee, as another great program awaits us today.
Museum café
We start the day in a relaxed manner at the Historical Museum on Dachauplatz, where the charming museum café is located. The associated garden is located in the inner courtyard of the former Minorite monastery, including a view of the pointed arches and the nave of the Minorite church.

Mural Art
From Dachauplatz, continue right towards Donaumarkt. On the way we go through the Kolpinghaus underpass. There you will find a “mural art” project by the city of Regensburg, a work of art in public space. This is a municipal pilot project for mural art in the World Heritage Site. You can find more mural art by the artist André Maier at Degginger and Palletti. Historical mural art can be admired on the Goliathhaus.
House of Bavarian History
A little further towards the Danube, we can already see the House of Bavarian History, which has been located on Donaumarkt since 2019. Covering an area of 2,500 m², it shows the period from the founding of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806 to the present day. The HDBG also hosts various temporary exhibitions and events.

Public Art – The Golden Waller
Of course, there is also public art to admire in Regensburg. In front of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, for example, you will find the golden Waller by artist duo Cisca Bogman & Oliver Störmer.
You can find more public art on our art walk.
KOG – Art Forum East German Gallery
We take a long walk west along the Danube to the Stadtpark. This is where the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie is located, an art museum that focuses on art in Eastern Europe. In the permanent exhibition, you can follow in the footsteps of German artists who once lived here. Changing exhibitions shed light on contemporary art in East Central Europe.

Cultural Center Alte Mälzerei
In the evening, we check out what’s on at the Alte Mälzerei cultural center on Galgenberg. There are always lots of concerts, cabaret, theater, readings, poetry slams and dance.
The Regensburg Dance Days and the International Cabaret Festival also take place here every year.

Theater
For those who prefer to go to the theater, Regensburg’s theater scene offers everything your heart desires. Theater Regensburg is Bavaria’s largest municipal multi-discipline theatre with five sections and the venues Theater am Bismarckplatz, Theater am Haidplatz, Antoniushaus and the Junges Theater. With its own ensembles for music theater, drama, dance, the Junges Theater and its own philharmonic orchestra and opera choir, there is a lot on offer here. In addition to the performances, there are also free events such as matinees and public rehearsals.
In addition to our municipal theater, there is also the Akademietheater, the Turmtheater, the Statt-Theater and the Figurentheater im Stadtpark.
We start Sunday in Regensburg Cathedral.
St. Peter’s Cathedral
St. Peter’s Cathedral is of course a must-see in Regensburg. Like Cologne Cathedral, Regensburg Cathedral was built as a classic Gothic cathedral. The Regensburger Domspatzen sing in St. Peter’s Cathedral every Sunday at 10.00 a.m. (except during school vacations). Guided tours of the cathedral take place daily at 2.30 pm.

Public art – a place of peaceful encounter “Misrach”
Around the corner from the cathedral is Neupfarrplatz. There, the Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan erected a monument on the foundation walls of the medieval synagogue. The work of art commemorates the coexistence of Christians and Jews, which has shaped Regensburg’s urban society since the year 981. As mentioned above with the synagogue, the Jewish quarter was razed to the ground in 1519. Dani Karavan artistically recreated the floor plan of the synagogue, thus visualizing an important chapter in Regensburg’s history. The word Misrach can be read in Hebrew script in the area of the synagogue’s former Torah shrine. Incidentally, it means “place of radiance” or “east”.
