REGENSBURG’S TWIN CITY IN HUNGARY!

Did you know that the “Buda” district in Budapest is Regensburg’s twin city? More precisely, it is Budavár, the 1st district of the Hungarian capital Budapest. This is where the castle district is located, with the famous Castle Palace, the Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church. Budapest is made up of a total of 23 districts and was formed in 1873 from the merger of Buda, on the western bank of the Danube, Óbuda and Pest. The partnership agreement between Regensburg and Budavár was signed on May 25, 2005. Like Regensburg, Budavár is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – but has been since 1987. The two cities have something else in common: Budavár is also on the Danube, but it is much wider here than here. With even more cruise ships.
The Buda Castle District is one of the most romantic parts of the city with many sights.
We were there and took a look around.

Here are the RegensburgNow tips for a visit to Budapest’s Buda district:

  1. Liberty Bridge
The 331 m long Liberty Bridge is our favorite bridge in Budapest. It connects Gellért Square on the Buda side with Main Customs Square on the Pest side. Incidentally, the beautiful market hall is on the Pest side.

  2. Gellért Baths
Budapest is practically the largest spa resort in the world, as numerous thermal and medicinal springs can be found here. The Buda district has the most thermal baths. One of the most famous is the Gellért Spa, built in Art Nouveau style. There is a time-honored hotel in the same building.
  3. Castle Garden Bazaar
The row of buildings and gardens known as Várkert bazár, with its arcaded stores and baroque gardens, is one of the capital’s sights.

  4. Ride the cable car.
The valley station of the cable car is located on Adam Clark Square below the castle hill. The short ride offers breathtaking views of the Chain Bridge and the Danube.

  5. Castle Palace
The monumental Buda Castle Palace is omnipresent on walks along the Danube and is probably the best-known and most striking building in the Hungarian capital Budapest. No wonder, at 400 meters long and 200 meters wide, the Castle Palace is the largest building in the whole of Hungary.
  6. Matthias Church
The magnificent Matthias Church is enthroned on the famous Buda Castle Hill and is not only known as the coronation church of Sissi and Franz, but also as the most beautiful church in the city. The colorful roof alone is worth seeing.

  7. Fishermen’s Bastion
This part of the castle wall was protected by the fishermen’s guild in the Middle Ages and therefore bears the name “Fishermen’s Bastion”. The Fishermen’s Bastion is 140 meters long and its pointed stone towers symbolize the seven tribal leaders of the Hungarians.

  8. Castle cave and labyrinth in the castle district
A network-like system of rock corridors and natural karst caves stretches several storeys below Buda’s castle district. The municipal museum of the Castle Cave is located here. A subterranean hike to below St. Matthias Church reveals the beauty of this cave, including stalactite formations.
  9. Chain Bridge
The oldest bridge in Budapest was built in 1849 and is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. This suspension bridge, which connects the two districts of Buda and Pest, offers unique views of both banks of the Danube. Incidentally, the bridge is called Széchenyi lánchíd in Hungarian.

  10. Enjoy the view. From Castle Hill you have a wonderful view of the Parliament and the Pest district. But you should definitely also take a look at the castle district from the other side of the Danube in the Pest district. Ideally in the evening, when everything is illuminated. Unique.
