SHORT ART WALK!

In addition to the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie, the Städtische Galerie im Leeren Beutel and the Regensburg galleries, there is also art to admire in public spaces in Regensburg. This means that there are also opportunities to view art outdoors outside opening hours.

We have put together a few publicly accessible works of art for you:

It all starts at the new synagogue at Brixener Hof. Since the opening on February 27, 2019, you can find the “Together” lettering by artist Tom Kristen there.
This open-air work of art floats above the inner courtyard of the new synagogue. Tom Kristen designed this wonderful lettering and the Reich forge then forged the artwork. A closer look reveals a poem by the Jewish poet Rose Ausländer. Lines from her poem ‘Together’ have been immortalized in the artwork in her handwriting. The poem begins with the words:
“Do not forget
Friends
We’re traveling together”
The best way to find out what happens next is to read about it yourself on site.

Our short art walk continues to Neupfarrplatz. Dani Karavan’s Mizrach monument can be found here.
The old synagogue, which was destroyed in the Middle Ages, once stood on Neupfarrplatz. On the exact site of the synagogue destroyed in 1519, a ground relief made of white granite blocks now replicates the layout of the old Regensburg synagogue: people often sit and enjoy the sun in summer at the beautiful Mizrach monument on Neupfarrplatz by Israeli artist Dani Karavan, with children playing between the indicated columns.

Our path leads straight ahead into Gesandtenstraße. At Bücher Pustet, we turn right into Pustetpassage and stand in front of Paletti. There you can see street art by Andre Maier, so-called mural art, which is what Andre Maier specializes in, he likes to paint facades. You can see more of his work in Wahlenstraße near Degginger or in the inner courtyard of the Hotel Münchner Hof.

We continue through the Pustetpassage into Rote Hahnengasse and turn left onto Haidplatz.
There we find three plaques from the “Stadtzeit – Zeitstadt” art project: at the Hotel Arch, the Goldenes Kreuz and the “Neue Waag” building. There is also a plaque for Haidplatz itself.
These plaques are part of a Regensburg art project that was realized in 1995 by the painter and graphic artist Maria Maier under the name “City Time – City of Time” to mark the anniversary of “750 Years of Imperial Freedom of the City of Regensburg”. The signs refer to the architectural history of the city and depict the ground plan of selected buildings and places in the form of pictograms. The floor plans are each viewed from a bird’s eye perspective.
A total of 76 panels can be found in the city center, covering the following ten topics: Churches, patrician houses, palaces, gates, museums, new buildings, squares, parks and the Old and New Town Halls.

From Haidplatz, we take a short detour to Baumhackergasse (to the right of the Thon Dittmer Palais). Since 1989, the air shaft of the underground parking garage in Baumhackergasse has been elegantly covered by an art object by Alexander Rogl in the form of a pyramid made of sheet steel.

Continue to Bismarckplatz. So back onto Haidplatz into Ludwigstraße and then left into Drei-Mohren-Straße onto Bismarckplatz. In front of the theater we find the “Three Muses of Music” by Josef Michael Neustifter. Three women are depicted holding a violin, tuba and guitar respectively.

There is a lot of art in Regensburg City Park, our next destination. From the theater, we head towards Jakobstor and walk along Dr.-Johann-Maier-Straße until we see the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie in the city park on our left.

The red carpet column installation on the façade of the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie is by Magdalena Jetelová. In the foreground you can see the artwork Eckzeichen by Otto Herbert Hajek. It’s worth taking a walk through the Stadtpark, where you can see a lot more art.
And hopefully soon again at the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie! Of course, there is much more art in public spaces in Regensburg. This is just a selection. For example, the golden Waller by artist duo Cisca Bogman & Oliver Störmer in front of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte caused quite a stir.

One of our favorite objects can be found at Gabelsberger Straße 8 in front of the indoor swimming pool: the bronze sculpture by artist Seff Weidl is called Die Ruhende (The Resting Woman)
